There
had been a long persistent demand from the Madurai people for a
separate college for Women since admission to Women candidates in
the city colleges was very difficult with the growing number of
Women students aspiring for college education
The
Sourashtra college Managing Committee passed a resolution in Sep.
1997 to start a Women's college. Later, it took specific efforts
and got the approval of the Government of Tamilnadu for the establishment
of a Women's college. It was proposed to start the women's college
at Pasumalai itself, adjacent to the land owned by the Sourashtra
College council where the Sourashtra College is now located. In
a separate enclosure of about 3 acres of land the Sourashtra College
for Women was started on 10.8.1998 under self-Finance pattern with
the following 3 courses.

Starting with just 70
students in the year 1998 - 99 the total strength of the girls,
have increased to 340 during the year 2000-2001.
The Women's college was
functioning in one of the premises of the Sourashtra College and
now the College for women has moved to its new building constructed
at a cost of Rs. 60 lakhs.
The objectives of the
Sourashtra college council are to provide education in Arts, Science
and other job oriented professional courses like Computer Science
etc., to the economically poor students of Sourashtra Community
and other s and to see that education reaches to those Women from
down-trodden families.
Well disciplined and dedicated
staff members have been contributing to the growth of this Infant
Women's College with the only aim of bringing it to the national
importance.
To help all the students
alike moderate tuition fee are collected and not charged exhorbitantly.
This fee concession would enable more number of deserving students
to enroll themselves for their collegiate education. The fee for
B.Sc. Home Science (Nutrition & Dietetics) has been fixed too low
only to benefit the girl students.
Library: A large collection
of useful and academic value in all the subjects of Languages, Electronics,
Computer Science, Food Industry, Nutrition & Diabetics and also
general Books are stored in the library.
The College is faciliated
with 3 Labs.Electronic lab: Computer Lab: Nutrition & Diabetics
lab.
