| 2. History of the department: |
The B.Sc Microbiology and M.Sc. Microbiology courses were started in the year 1994 and 2000 respectively. Since then the department has successfully been offering the B.Sc and M.Sc programmes. The department is well furnished with adequate rooms, lab facilities and library. At present there are 150 students and 8 well qualified faculty. The department is producing university ranks every year.

| 3. Objectives: |
The objective of the programme is to equip the students with good theoretical and practical knowledge applicable in food industries, pharmaceuticals, clinical laboratories and to pursue higher education.

| 4. Eligibility For Admission: |
Candidates seeking admission to the B.Sc Degree course must have passed the Higher Secondary examination of Group I or II of the Government of Tamilnadu or any other examination recognised by the syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University as its equivalent.
For PG:- Any UG Degree with science subjects

| 5. Duration Of The Course: |
The duration of the course shall be three academic years comprising six semesters with two semesters in each academic year for B.Sc. and 4 semesters for M.Sc.

| 7. Course Content: |
The B.Sc. course consists of 28 theory papers and 8 practical papers.The M.Sc. course consists of 12 theory papers,7 practical papers and 1 dissertation.
