| 2. History of the Department: |
The Physics Department was created in the year 1967, when the college was functioning at the city complex with two professors, Prof. K.S.Mohanchandran and Prof. G.R.Surendran to handle the classes for pre university course.
The department was then upgraded to Under Graduate Physics course in the year 1980 in Sourashtra College, Madurai. Later on it is functioning well with dedicated professors of the department till today. Dr. K. Kesavasamy who was working as Assistant Prof. here in the year 1983 has joined ISRO, Sriharikota relinquishing his job and presently with TCS as Recruitment and Training Manager at Trivandrum.
The department has been successfully offering the course to cater to the needs of the students’ community which is interested in uplifting the science. The department has adequate number of rooms and a well equipped laboratory with modern apparatus. The total number of 110 students and the 7 faculty members are well accommodated. The department has been producing exemplary results varying between 90% and 100% right from the inception of the department. Many of our students were well placed with high positions after their graduation from this department.

| 3. Objectives: |
The objective of the B.Sc(Physics) course is to design the course under semester system on the basis of revising the syllabus once in every three years so that students from higher secondary course can equip well with the specific knowledge and skills to

| 4. Eligibility for Admission: |
Candidates seeking admission to the B.Sc(Physics) degree course must have passed the higher secondary examination (any group I/II) of the government of Tamil Nadu or any other examination or board recognized by the syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University on its equivalent.

| 5. Duration of the Course: |
The duration of the course shall be three academic years comprising six semesters with two semesters in each academic year.

| 7. Course Content: |
The B.Sc(Physics) course has a total number of 18(14+4) papers including practical papers and 10(8+2)papers for ancillary subjects (Maths & Chemistry). Mechanics and Properties of Matter, Sound, Heat and Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Modern Physics, Digital Electronics and Classical Mechanics are important subjects.
