COURSES OFFERED: B.A., M.A., and M.Phil


The English Department offers undergraduate, post-graduate and pre-doctoral research courses to students, both men and women, who have an aptitude for eastern and western literatures and who wish to hone their skills in English Communication.

M.A. (ENGLISH ): (Aided Course)


Started in 1982, this two-year post-graduate course comprising four semesters trains graduates in English Literature to specialize in advanced literary and linguistic studies.

HIGHLIGHTS OF B.A AND M.A:
  • A survey of English classics from the Renaissance to the present.
  • A survey of American literature of the 19 th and 20 th centuries.
  • A survey of Post-Colonial Literature, Indian writing in English and the latest critical approaches to literary studies.
  • A comprehensive study of the English language with focus on the salient elements of grammar, correct usage and phonetics.
  • An exclusive paper on “English for Career Development” which purports to fulfill the communicative needs of graduates looking for jobs.

The two-year post-graduate course, which also features all the above, enables the students to gain further critical insights into all these literatures.

M.Phil. : (Self-financed Course)


This self-financed course, spanning one year (two semesters), trains postgraduates in English to do research with options in recent Indian, Post-Colonial And Western Literatures. Research Methodology and Literary Theories are its highlights.

FACULTY:


Qualified teachers with vast teaching and research experience encourage the student community to enrich their literary sensibility and communicative proficiency. The Department has 15 faculty members guiding the scholars in all academic activities.

LITERARY ASSOCIATIONS:


Besides celebrating the annual intercollegiate literary fiesta “PARNASSUS” since 1999, the Tagore English Association and the Post-Graduate English Association conduct competitions and quizzes to its own students and awards prizes to the winners.

LIBRARY:


Apart from the vast store of books on literature and language available in the general library, the English department maintains an annually enriched library with hundreds of books for students use. The Gift Books Library, containing books donated by our faculty members and alumni, also caters to the students’ intellectual needs.

The English Department, in short, is the right academe for those students who have been striving to communicate, to emulate and to celebrate.
