The Department of Commerce is an active and vibrant Department with a good track record for the past 35 years. The Department of Commerce is recognised by the Madurai Kamaraj University as a Research Centre for pursuing Ph.D., programme in Commerce. Besides, the Department offers M.Phil., M.Com., B.Com., B.Com (Computer Applications) programmes.

Courses Offered

B.Com

Sourashtra College offers B.Com since 1972. The Department admits around 140 students, both boys and girls in two sections for the UG Programme every year. The Commerce Department has been recognised by the UGC to offer vocational stream courses in B.Com. In fact, it is one among the few selected colleges by the UGC to offer Vocational Stream in B.Com.

Eligibility Criteria

Those who have passed H.S.C. (XII std.) or any other equivalent examination as recognised by the Madurai Kamaraj University

Special Features

The Department has been recognised to offer Vocational Stream in B.Com during the IX Plan period and as a result the Department offers now B.Com – Computer Application.

During the X Plan period, the UGC has selected the Department for offering Career Oriented Programmes at the First Degree Level. From the year 2005-06 onwards, the Department offers the following Add-On Courses as Career Oriented Programmes at the First Degree Level:

Stock Market Operations

Export Management

Income Tax and Sales Tax Practices.

The Add-on courses are offered at three levels viz., Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. The Department is well equipped with infrastructure, both human resources as well as other physical resources like Internet Connectivity and other necessary Computer Software related to the above mentioned Add-On courses.

In addition to the UGC sponsored courses, the department offers some need based courses depending upon the requirement of the environment. From 2005-06 the Department offers Computerised Accounting Package-Tally. The course is designed and examination is conducted by the College and the certificates are issued on the aegis of Sourashtra College.

M.Com

Eligibility Criteria

Any student who has passed B.Com | B.Com (Computer Application) | B.com (Corporate Secretaryship) | B.B.A. or any other equivalent degree recognised by the Madurai Kamaraj University. The Department encourages students to opt for Project Work, instead of a Theory Paper, as the students get exposure to real-time experience.

M.Phil.,

Any student who has passed M.Com. Degree with 55%, or any other degree equivalent as recognised by the M.K.U. The Department has been granted affiliation from the year 2003-04 to offer M.Phil., Programme. The Department is well equipped with a Library with around 3000 books and more than 20 periodicals and Journals.

Ph.D.,

The Department has been recognised by the MKU as a Research Centre in Commerce from the year 2005 onwards. The faculty members have a wealth of Research Experience. Among the faculty members five members are Doctorates. Of the faculty members four members are approved by Madurai Kamaraj University as “Research supervisors” for guiding Ph.D., Scholars. The Department is a dynamic research department. Around 10 scholars are pursuing research in the Department.
